I was reading about a gentleman in North Carolina who was a cabinet maker. He made unique items for customers and often donated his crafts to various community groups to help with their fundraising efforts. One item this gentleman made regularly, and gave away regularly, was a small box he called the “God Box.” It was made of beautiful cherry wood with a brass plate on top reading “God Box,” and inside there was a note instructing the recipient to put all their worries and cares in the God Box and leave them there. This man made a ministry of giving away hundreds of boxes. And it gave people hope in God.
Now soon after reading this story, I watched an old Hercule Poirot made-for-TV movie, starring Agatha Christie’s famous fictional detective. In this movie, Pandora’s Box is mentioned, and Hercule explains what it is, that “all evil escaped from the box, but there was one other creature, very small, very frail, that followed them into the world – Hope.” And then Hercule says: “There is nothing in the world so damaged that it cannot be repaired by the hand of Almighty God. I encourage you to know this because without this certainty, we should all of us be mad.”
I thought of these two boxes – Pandora’s Box and the God Box. The Pandora Box is a legend trying to explain all the evilness in our world. We recognize that evil does exist, and we know that anything evil creates havoc and brings destruction. But in this midst, we find Hope. Hope helps to overcome. Perhaps the pandemic in which we find ourselves represents some evil which has escaped into our world – something unknown, something attacking us, something bringing its destruction, something threatening our existence. But Hope will help us. Hope represents goodness and healing, love and compassion, kindness and benevolence, care and concern for our welfare, and we find this in God. God is love. God is Hope.
The God Box contains the Hope of God. It is God confronting all our worries and concerns. All our struggles and stresses. All which preys on our minds and creates havoc in our lives. The God Box represents God’s Hope present with us. God at work for us and with us.
Can we put our trust in this? That God does listen to us, that God cares about what is happening to us, that God will put God’s power to work, and that God will provide for us? Can we put our worries into a God Box? Pray for God’s intervention to help the world, to find a cure for Covid-19, to restore humanity, and that Hope will prevail!
“If God is for us, who can be against us?…Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?…No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8: 31, 35, 38, 39.
